FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Statement on the updated mask mandate guidance
Its been 8 days since we learned of the new guidance from Governor Inslee. This new guidance stated that by March 12, masks will no longer be required in places like stores and schools. We have since learned that Seattle Public Schools is planning to undo their mask mandate, after initially keeping their mandate.
We condemn this move by Seattle Public Schools. Like we said before, since students are still very close to each other, masks help protect all students, especially immunocompromised ones.
The removal of the mask mandate is a highly political tactic, to keep elected officials in office. Political figures are pushing to eliminate the mask mandate, to garner more votes.
We call on the superintendent and the school board to stop the removal of the mask mandate, or we will be forced to walk out of school for our own safety. Stop politicizing our safety. As students, we should not have to be in the situation where we have to beg the school to put in place common sense solutions. We demand that the Superintendent and School Board not waver from their universal masking requirement, and reinstate it, or students will be walking out. We also demand that the district upholds student safety as a top priority, with student input. We hope that it does not come to it, but if it does we will not hesitate to take action for our safety.
